First Spring Storm

Our road, washed out.

Thankfully it has come, and gone.  The power of it all is beautiful and unnerving all at once.  First the darkness and stillness, the first rumble of thunder.  Down, hesitantly, come the first drops of rain, hard and large.  The winds pickup, the rain follows, first a bit harder, then in a fog inducing deluge.  It poured and poured and poured and as my son asked when will it end I said soon as the sky lightened.  First we had to get a few minutes of pinging hail bouncing off the ground, the roof, the house and everything in its path.  Only pea sized, a few nickle sized.  I looked over at the horses and they had their backs to the wind, heads low, tails blowing to the side.  As much as I worry about them they don't head into the shelter so they mustn't mind.

And then it was over.

The winds afterward were scarier than the storm itself until we heard about the damage done east of us by tornadoes.  We pray our friend Lorie and her business is ok.

Now there is only hidden snow left after this weekend, the snow under the trees or in the shade where the warmer sun's rays cannot reach.  A few roads here are washed out, ours included.  Water is up to the top of the bridge on a certain creek and the flood plains of the Black river is fully full with swirling rushing water.

But spring is coming!  Did you hear the spring peepers??  Yes, it is coming they say!  Sometimes it takes a long an arduous winter to make me really appreciate spring although, really, I wish I could escape the mud...

  1. Yes, Spring is coming! The Black River is rushing, and while it is a beauty to behold, it is also dangerous. I am drawn to it, though. Peace, Jane

  2. My sister lives in Merrill. She had a friend who had major damage too. Everyone was okay, but the cat. He did not make it. :(
